Claude Langlois : Jesuits of the province of france and jesuits in bri-TANNY IN 1750. The catalogues of the province of France show no increase for the 18th Century, due to the stability in the number of houses and colleges after 1711 ; also, a large proportion of natives of Normandy and Britanny. Their activity is illustrated in a medium-sized town, Vannes ; here the Jesuits occupied a stra¬ tegic position with, in their college, the monopoly of education for the ruling classes and control of theological training, and, through 2 houses for retreats, a real influence on the countryside. Even after their expulsion, their influence remained in the form of their pastoral organisation, which ensured that their spiritual values continued, into the 19th Century, to inspire the piety of the élite.
