The exceptional continuity of relations between France and its former colonies of sub-Saharan Africa has at first met succesfully the challenge of the independences. The economic crisis of the years 1980-1990 and the devaluation of the franc CFA in 1994 have nevertheless weakened this relation. Today’ globalization, with its logic of openness and the arrival of new partner countries may threaten what is left from France’s “ private reserve” in Africa. But it is not as strategic any more for France as it was in the past, in particular on the economic plan.
