Summary : The study of the use and legacy of scientific instruments is considered both on a long-term basis and with respect to the daily activity of the observatory of Toulouse. It enables us to perceive evolutions, breaks and continuity in the understanding of technical objects. The manners of acquisition and transfer are identified by instrumental genealogy. From the 19th century on an acceleration in the renewal of technical tools can be observed. At the same time the use of instruments was deeply altered. One witnesses a separation between science and technology, as well as a process of standardization.
