Using the case of a heavy machinery company, this article attempts to show how the large-scale distribution of new technologies of information processing and circulation, in a crisis situation, contributes to a recombining movement of tertiary work. The conception and means of setting up a new information system appear to closely overlap the search for management policies suited to the economic environment. The information system seems to be increasingly well-integrated, flexible and evolutive, accompanying a decompartmentalized, non-rigid system of organization. The drawing up of the overall scheme and the implementation of the different applications call for the intervention and collaboration of partners who traditionally fulfil separate roles. This restores power and control relationships between different services and within teams. In particular, the roles of data process ing services evolve towards a service that is more appropriate to the field of application. Correspondence between the services and the information system develops, and, in the company under observation, is taken in charge by users who have «drifted» into data processing. Individual work situations are located in a more complex environment and appear essentially unstable and evolutive. They tend to be based on two apparently contradictory types of demand : — a common kernel of knowledge and references : to manage information, ensure links of complementarity in a collective piece of works, become involved in the search for solutions, taking into account the organization and management dimensions ; — an increased understanding of the basic speciality - administrative procedure, accounting.
