Le diable et la trinité tricéphales. A propos d'une pseudo- « vision de la Trinité » advenue à un novice de saint Norbert de Xanten

The Vita Norbeti, written in the XIIth century, tells the vision a novice of the saint founder of the order of Prémontré have had about a three-headed character telling he was the Trinity. In the main time being three-headed was reserved for the Devil. The tricephalous Trinity will take place in art a century later, and be important from the XIVth century. The article will show the first examples of it, presenting various theories concerning the genesis of tricephalous Trinity and try to analyse the difference between history of visions and history of art. The reject of tricephaly as a diabolic figure in the Prémontré could perhaps show the will to ignore any residual Celtic Paganism.
