Between 1979 and 1983 the present authors carried out systematic survey preceding the construction of the A. 71 motorway (the section from Bourges to the southern limit of the department of the Cher). This was part of a comprehensive project which continued, until 1989, with test and the excavation of sites thus identified, watching-briefs and ultimately the analysis of the data obtained. Only the survey component is dealt with here ; the publication of the main excavations is to follow. At the time this was an experimental project with the aim of facilitating cooperation between archeolo- gists and developers in the context of the large-scale works ; to test methods and techniques of survey best suited to various periods and conditions ; and as a multi-period study of settlement in this region of Berry (Champagne, the valley of the Cher and southern Boischaut) from prehistory to the present day, not forgetting landscape archeology and ethnographic aspects. Following on introduction to the theoretical frame-work of the project and the methods employed, the results are presented according to the different periods of human settlement.
