This study deals with the manner in which July 14th immediately became a subject for commemorative drama recorded in word and images. The patriot Palloy's efforts to publicize the memory of Bastille Day is only the best known of many such campaigns. A specific rhetoric of dramatization developed and is analyzed here in relation to theatrical expression at the time in France and abroad. When brought to the stage the storming of the Bastille became total theater where a new sense of imagination could have full play.
