Abstract. - The new Law of the Sea, generated by the Montego Bay Convention (1982), significantly strenghtened the geopolitical role of maritime coastlines. Henceforth, these latter are used as pins for the 200 miles zone's demarcation. This new context is generating some major consequences which are scrutinized within this paper. There is a contradiction of extended coastal juridiction on the one hand and the need for even greater international cooperation in ocean matter on the other.
