Repetition and Differentiation : autochthonous "Genos" and "Phusis" in Athens In "Born from the Earth. Myth and Politics in Athens", N. Loraux returns to Greek fictions about beginnings. Myths about autochthony are naturally concerned with political identity but also with the difference between the sexes : by designating as the birthplace of the first citizen (at least in Athens) the soil itself of the city, the autochthonous discourse justifies the exclusion of both women and foreigners from civil society. The Greeks nevertheless managed to place limits on such an ideology. This is evident in their language and its polysemic character. The present article endeavours to show the revelatory contradictions of the autochthonous discourse.
