Abstract : Traffic, national parks, and regional natural parks in the French Alps : interaction between the objectives of accessibility, protection and development The creation of three national parks and four regional natural parks in the French Alps have endowed the region with important development and environmental protection structures. In a context of increasing tourist flows, the management of park traffic depends on the different policies and objectives of each park, and often leads to paradoxical situations. Modern transport and traffic facilities (particularly parking areas and improved roads) may at first seem out of place in a park, but their gradual integration in mountain parks can play an important role in helping develop heritage sites, protecting the natural environment and informing the public. Interaction between the different objectives and actors involved is part of an ongoing process with built-in feedback mechanisms to help achieve sound and sustainable tourism development.
