«Scythes justes» et «Scythes féroces»: deux traditions relatives aux Scythes dans la Géographie de Strabon

Xavier Corde, « Fair Scythians » and « Fierce Scythians »: two Traditions about the Scythians in Strabo's Geography, DHA 31/1, 2005, 79-91. Abstract: In the seventh book of his Geography, Strabo resorts to two opposite traditions about the Scythians to structure his text : the « fair Scythians » (« Scythes justes ») and the « fierce Scythians » (« Scythes féroces »). In order to achieve this structuring, he has to revise his vocabulary and conceive a diachronic explanation reconciling both traditions. The issues of commercial practices and of their negatives outcomes are the ones enabling him to do so. These two themes are also present in Diodorus' Library of History : their use in Diodorus and Strabo are here compared.
