Abstract : The concept of an alpine architecture, although widely accepted, is not at all precise. The author offers an historical examination of the different phases in the construction of this concept. Although each period has been marked by opposing views with respect to both the content and the meaning of the concept, such opposition has in reality been more formal than deep-rooted. Today, we are witnessing an explosion of different forms which, in the final analysis, is less dangerous than the possible disappearance of the landscapes.
