Abstract. - Watsuji's and Nishida's main thesis regarding place and milieu are discussed in order to show an homology of these thesis with the structures of the Japanese language as well as with the relationship of the Japanese self with the other and with things. The conclusion shows the interest and the limits of these thesis in the scope of an overcoming of modernity.
