Dewatering of the Ljubljansko barje moor and with this connected regulation of water regime of Ljubljanica river has been an issue since the ancient times, as the Romans dewatered the Ljubljsko barje moor in the areas, where the road constructions were planed. Supposedly, they also influenced the course of river-bed with partial straightening. Different land amelioration measurements wereudperformed till 1908, as the changed alternative project of engineer Podhagský was started. In 1955, as the project was completed with finishing the water gate at the Ambrožev trg square, the Mestna Ljubljanica river got its present image.udSoon after the beginning of water gate operation, the planed water level was lowered for 1,70 m, what in combination with wear of hydromechanical equipment of the dam, lately causes more and more problems, related to its operation. Therefore, in the past two decades there were some attempts of solving these issues, where in all cases the replacement of the old water gates with the new ones wasudprovided. However, the main differences were in the types of water gate. In order to find the best solution, their advantages and disadvantages were listed and compared. Since different kinds of operational mechanisms are used to manipulate the water gate, in the thesis they were also compared. At the end the most appropriate combination was chosen, which at the same time demands the minimum affect on architecturally protected cultural heritage. By installing the new water gate, also the conditions of its operation would change, therefore the last part of this thesis contains modifications, which should be introduced into current operating rules.udIn order to ensure the integrity of regulation of circumstances, in thesis also the proposal for the rehabilitation of the inefficient fish ladder was prepared.
