Construction of a 3D model of a sailer using a photogrammetric method

The wish to test the possibility of using an amateur (non-metrical) digital camera and a photogrammetric method of stereo-image restitution to construct a 3D model of the sailer has led to a concrete result - a 3D model of the hull of the chosen sailer First 40.7. Knowing the camera's internal orientation elements which were acquired through the process of calibration was necessary. The 3D model of the sailer was made using a photogrammetric method which is based on stereoscopic observation. I needed the stereo-pairs of the sailer, and I made them based upon a plan that I had prepared beforehand. With an electronic tachymeter with classical geodetic measurements I measured the control points and check points as well as additional longitudal profiles used for the analysis of photogrammetric observation quality. In order to acquire the 3D data to make a 3D model of the sailer I continued the work on a digital photogrammetric station which enabled stereo-pair orientation, 3D observation and measurements of the stereomodel. I measured the longitudinal and transverse profiles which were the basis of a 3D wire-frame model. By processing longitudinal and transverse profiles of the 3D wire-frame model of the sailer's hull with CAD software I realized the basis for the making of the surface 3D model, which represents my final product. With the making of the 3D model I demonstrated that with the help of stereo-image restitution and an amateur camera 3D data of satisfactory quality (centimetre precision) can be acquired and used for the making of a 3D model in a corresponding CAD software. The 3D model made can be used for testingudthe capacity of the sailer, it can also be used for various simulations, animations orudvisualizations.
