Utilizing the Printer Port to teach Digital Design and Digital Interfacing

This paper describes the development and application of a digital circuit prototyping system, called the 'PortBuffer', that is utilized for teaching digital logic design and digital interfacing. The primarily goal was to develop an inexpensive, simple to use device that could be retained by students, that allows the students to undertake digital experimentation at home. The PortBuffer consists of a simple external circuit that attaches to the printer port of a computer, which is then operated by designed MS-Windows controlling software. Student feedback was overall positive and provided comments on how to further improve the design.
