This paper looks at innovative methods in the capture of highquality 3D detail from historical artifacts. These forensicallyaccurate details are then applied for use in building engaginginteractive entertainment outcomes. The Mephisto, the onlyremaining German tank from the First World War, was used acase study to examine the methods available to accurately record alarge and iconic piece of war history. This paper introduces 3Dscanning workflows as a method to create an accurate threedimensional model of Mephisto, and also addresses how the highquality information from the tank can preserve, and also allow foranalysis and presentation of Mephisto in ways that have neverbeen seen before. Combining 3D scanning workflows withforensic analysis and historical war records, this paper exploresthe possibilities of how to best communicate and present this 3Dinformation through interactive and virtual realities. It describeshow augmented and virtual realities can create a window into thepast, possibly answering some of the questions surrounding thetank, its story, and allowing visitors an interactive user experiencebringing realism and truth to a historically accurate digital tank. Thus building a powerful mechanism for communicating historythrough innovative capture and presentation techniques.
