Debating is anudeffective pedagogical technique because of the level of responsibility for learningudand active involvement by all students. It can build up their listening ability andudspeaking ability and increase their motivation in speaking.udThis research has the aims: 1) to investigate the process of Active DebateudTechnique in teaching and learning speaking 2) to investigate the students’udrespond with the practice of Active Debate Techniquein teaching and learningudspeaking ability 3) to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of ActiveudDebate Techniquein teaching and learning speaking.udThe researcher used three techniques in collecting data: observation fieldudnote, Interview and questionnaire. This study shows teachers’ technique whileudteacher teach speaking using debate activity, the steps of teaching Active DebateudTechnique at Second years at MA Madinatunnjah, the researcher recordedudteaching and learning process using field notes observation. By using openudquestionnaire the researcher wanted to gate the students’ respond to Active DebateudTechnique in teaching and learning speaking, and the last by using interviewingudteacher and students to get the advantages and disadvantages of Active DebateudTechnique in teaching and learning speaking.udDuring the observation, students were able to speak communicatively. Itudwas proven that there were many rebuttals in it. The rebuttal speech is anudopportunity to summarize and extend student’s critical arguments in the debate,udsummarize and refute the arguments of the other team, and show why, given theudarguments that have been advanced in the debate; students’ side wins. Studentsudwere like or interested in debate activity, because may be their competenceudbackground, such as less of vocabulary that make them difficult in transferringudtheir own opinion to be producing by speaking. The advantages of debate are:udDebate increase students’ motivation, so debate improve students’ criticaludthinking, debate develop students’ communicative skill, an easy to defend theudissues which served by the teacher. In other hand, the disadvantages of debateudare: students sometimes don’t have any background information to address theudproposition, students are not flexible in building arguments, needs long time inudselecting a controversial topic in the field with two identifiable, arguable, andudopposing sides that are appropriate to debate, then debate need long preparation.udKey words: Speaking, teaching and learning speaking “active debate technique,udstudents’ responds, advantages and disadvantages of debate”
