We think that values contribute to an understanding of the different patterns in teaching art subjects, when they are made explicit. This article pertains to what is contained in the values as expressed by the music teachers when the question is first asked, implicitly. If the values are made up of preferences that predispose individuals to act in a certain way, they cannot as such be registered : they can only be reached by inference. In order to do so, five indicators are examined: the purposes of musical education, the personal qualities required, confidence in the present education system, satisfaction and feeling of freedom en the classroom. Wishing to integrate a subjectivity into our approach, which otherwise strives to be the most objective possible, keeping this subject in mind, we have turned our attention towards survey methods. Descriptive and inferential statistics tools as well as propositional speach analysis help us in each phase : from the description to the confirmation of results. Concerning the national part of the survey under study, approximately 190 answers by teachers are used. Our approach is to propose a description and an analysis between individuals. It would seem that an overall answer as concerns values is not possible, including one that would be valid for all situations and all levels of thought that you are likely to encounter in the complex area of education.
