The Learning Grid at the University of Warwick : a libraryudinnovation to support learning in higher education

Colleagues often ask, ‘what is The Learning Grid?’udand ‘why is it different?’ The following articleudaims to highlight the unique elements of thisudlibrary facility and also to present some of theudkey areas of development that continue to evolveudsince its opening in September 2004.udThe Learning Grid was designed and is managedudby the University Library. This meant that theudUniversity Librarian had direct input into theuddesign and concept for the space that measuresudapproximately 1350m². Because the space wasudidentified as an opportunity to provide studentsudat Warwick with a unique learning experience, theudneed to work in collaboration with other supportudservices was essential in exploring the aimsudand objectives of this facility, as well as its design.udArchitects from MacCormack, Jamieson, Prichardud(MJP), London, were integral to the developmentudprocess, ensuring that draft designs reflected theudevolving concepts for the purpose of the spaceudand activities that would take place within it.
