The Measures for the Palliative Care in Our Institute and the University Hospital(Symposium,Palliative Care,The 72nd General Meeting of the Society of Tokyo Womenu27s Medical University)

Palliative care medicine is necessary not only in the palliative care ward but also in the general wards of the university hospital. The Institute of Gastroenterology, Tokyo Womenu27s Medical University has made efforts regarding pain management palliative surgical treatment and the promotion of home care medicine in treating terminal cancer patients since 2002. Pain management: We made a "Pain Management Manual" based on the WHO Cancer Pain Relief Program to unify the pain management in our institute and adopted CT-guided splanchnic nerve block. Palliative surgical treatment: We adopted not only pharmacotherapy but also palliative surgical treatment such as bypass operation, PEG, PTEG, and stenting for obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract. Practice of home care medicine: We promote home care medicine for terminal cancer patients in stable condition. A palliative care team was established in Tokyo Womenu27s Medical University in October 2005. It is necessary to develop care teams making full use of the characteristics of the university hospital.
