摘要

Diabetes and associated metabolic non communicableuddiseases (NCDs) including hypertension, obesity etcudare no longer a disease of affluent developed nations, udthe prevalence rates of diabetes and metabolic NCDs isudsteadily increasing in developing countries like India.udThe epidemiological transition occurring in the India, as audresult of rapid urbanization and economic development, udhas perhaps made it one of the epicentres of the diabetesudepidemic. Currently, in India, there are large data deficitsudon diabetes and associated metabolic NCDs with regardsudto their prevalence and disease outcomes. The nationaludIndian Council of Medical Research–India Diabetesud(ICMR–INDIAB) study was designed to provide accurateudand comprehensive state- and national-level data onudthe prevalence of diabetes and other metabolic NCDsudin India. Phase I results of the ICMR-INDIAB study wasudconducted in four regions (Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra,udJharkhand and Chandigarh) between 2008 and 2010. Theudresults of the ICMR-INDIAB study shows that of the fourudregions studied, the prevalence of diabetes was highestudin Chandigarh followed by Tamilnadu, Maharashtra andudJharkhand. The glycemic control among self-reporteduddiabetic subjects is poor in India, with less than a thirdudof subjects exhibiting good glycemic control. In addition,udIndia has a huge burden of hypertension, obesity anduddyslipidemia and poor levels of physical activity, whichudmay predispose to even larger increases in NCDs inudthe future. Thus, the results from ICMR-INDIAB studyudhelps not only in earlier detection of diabetes/prediabetesudthrough screening, it also lays the foundation for effectiveudNCD prevention and control in India.
