Excess weight, particularly centraludobesity, is recognized to be a majoruddeterminant of diabetes risk in alludpopulations, with the magnitude of theudassociation reported as being stronger inudAsians than whites (1–3). Consequently, udindicators of overweight have been incorporatedudinto several guidelines for theudearly identification of individuals withudtype 2 diabetes (4). However, the anthropometricudcut points for different ethnicudgroups have been determined in variousudways, leading to uncertainty about theirudapplicability to diabetes screening. Here, udwe clarify current uncertainty regardingudethnic differences in the relationship betweenudoverweight and diabetes andudwhether there is a single measure of overweightudthat can be determined routinelyudand applied universally in clinical practiceudto facilitate earlier detection of diabetesudin the general population.
