Software maintenance is an important activity inudsoftware engineering. Over the decades, softwareudmaintenance costs have been continually reported toudaccount for a large majority of software costsud[Zelkowitz 1979, Boehm 1981, McKee 1984, Boehmud1988, Erlikh 2000]. This fact is not surprising. On theudone hand, software environments and requirements areudconstantly changing, which lead to new softwareudsystem upgrades to keep pace with the changes. Onudthe other hand, the economic benefits of softwareudreuse have encouraged the software industry to reuseudand enhance the existing systems rather than to buildudnew ones [Boehm 1981, 1999]. Thus, it is crucial forudproject managers to estimate and manage the softwareudmaintenance costs effectively.
