In Japan, the modern drama, which is an important element of thecontemporary art, begins with the foundation of the Tsukiji Little Theaterin the year 1924. This era, the second half of the 1920s, also coincides withthe end of the so-called “Taisyo Democracy”. The task of this study is toanalyze the effects of the Tsukiji Little Theater and the diverse historicalsituations revolving around it. This task will inevitably lead us to considerthe basic character of the “modern” in Japan. This paper, the introductorypart of the whole study, limits the range of discussion to the fundamentalproblems only.
