A nice blue colour arises from acetaldehyde, Na2[Fe(CN)5NO] • 2 H 2 0 and piperidineud(Simon-Awe Reaction). Structure elucidation of the blue material (leading to 1) byudcombustion analysis, ligand exchange to [Fe(CN)e]4-, reduction to β-aminoethanol andudhydrolysis to glyoxal are described. - The blue complex does not contain the amine moietyudbut is formed via an enamine, an colourless immoniumsalt 2 and its hydrolysis to 1. -udLoach's experiments are re-evaluated.
