This report on English language learning deals with how students at the U.E.C. can exert and develop their English ability through the Internet outside the classrooms. The writer considers that those who aim to master the language need to be exposed to it as long as possible beside learning it at school. However, the problem is that it would be difficult for the students to find and utilize web sites which are useful and appropriate for them. The report introduces them to two sites for the first and second year students and one site for juniors and seniors: the former are Shukan Student Times Online and VOA Special English and the latter is Daily Yomiuri Online. Among the articles from them, Studying Abroad by Kazuya Muto is especially recommended. It is a serial in 48 installments written by a university student who went to Australia. The report of mine explains how to put the sites to good use by giving concrete examples. Although the articles from the sites can be suitable as learning materials for rapid reading, intensive reading, reading out loud and listening, the writer advises students to prefer to read whatever articles they like to carry on their intellectual pursuits rather than to study English just as they do at school. The report concludes by suggesting some ways to build up their motivation for autonomous learning with the help of teachers majoring in science.
