This paper contents its attention on the large use of unskilledudlabour force for non-traditional residential buildings inudparticular and for the construction works in Nigeria as a whole.udThe writer notes wit h sadness that a major unemployment ofudall categories of workers in the construction .industry especiallyudthe unskilled ones is now on the increase, unlike before when theudconstruction industry used to be the largest industry in the nationudemploying an appreciable proportion of the work force . The reasonudadduoed £or this is as a. result of the non reflection of indigenisationudin moat of the architectural designs and the non patronisationudof our indigenous contractors which in turn leads to mass use ofudmechanical plants and other sophisticated but costly constructional items .uditems thereby rendering thousands o£ able bodied men and women 1nudthe construction sites redundant. It is noted further that thisudl)q"'"'ud~ development has lead to increase in crime rate in the countryudand a drastic reduction in construction profits especially when oneudviews the high exchange rate used in procuring these equipmentudand the overall maintenance costa.udTowards reversmg from this ugly practice therefore, the needudfor the use of unskilled labour force is particularly stressed anduduseful suggestions towards realizing this goal are discussed in thisudmanner.
