However,udlanguage will serve its meaning if only there are people who apply the language,udand the process must be settled in the proper context. Actions performed viaudutterances are generally called speech acts and, in English, are commonly givenudmore specific labels, such as apology, complaint, invitation, promise, or request.udRequest strategy as one of pragmatic phenomena proves the ability of speakersudnot only in the language but also in applying the language in context. From theuddiscussion above, the researcher intended to study on how request strategyudhappened and the sentence pattern used by the native speakers. The mainudobjective of this research is to give the authentic material for the speaking class.udThe formulation of research problems were: 1) what request strategy isudemployed by speakers in conversations occurring in the movie entitled Divergent?ud2) how are the formal patterns of the request strategy as employed in theudconversations occurring in the movie entitled Divergent?udThe purpose of this study were to: 1) know what strategies that are used inudrequest acts in conversation in movie entitled Divergent 2) know how formaludpatterns of the request strategy as employed in the conversations occurring in theudmovie entitled Divergent.udThe research design of this study was qualitative approach whichudemployed content analysis. It is intended to investigate those two formulation ofudresearch problems in relation to request strategies. The data source were alludutterances in conversation of Divergent movie subtitles along with their contextsudderived from the movie scenes. The data were all utterances in conversation ofudDivergent movie subtitles containing requestive acts.udThe result showed that: 1) mood derivable, suggestory formulae,udobligation statement, mild hints, want statement, mild hints, query preparatory,udhedged performative, and explicit performative, 2) in mood derivable strategyudfound 160 structure applied positive verbal pattern, 6 structure applied negativeudverbal pattern; 1 utterance in explicit performative applied positive verbal pattern;udin hedged performative found 1 structure applied WH-question, 1 structureudapplied question tag, 1 structure applied positive verbal pattern (if-clause); inudobligation statement strategy found 16 structure applied positive verbal pattern, 1udstructure applied negative verbal pattern; in want statement strategy found 5udstructure applied positive verbal sentence, 2 utterance applied negative verbaludpattern; in suggestory formulae strategy found 12 structures applied positiveudverbal pattern, 7 structures applied negative verbal pattern; in query preparatoryudviiudfound 4 structures applied positive verbal pattern; in strong hints strategy found 3udutterances applied positive nominal pattern, 2 utterances applied positive verbaludpattern; in mild hints strategy found 5 structures applied positive verbal pattern, 2udstructures applied positive nominal pattern, and 1 structure applied negative verbaludpattern.udBased on the result of the study, the researcher wants to give suggestionudfor the students, teacher, and future researcher. The students can observe furtherudabout kinds of strategies that can be used in their way in delivering the request.udThe teacher may take some examples to teach speaking, especially in the ways ofudrequest. The future researcher are suggested to develop their study in moreudspecific strategy in requesting which is still being rarely to be analyzed like hintsudstrategy.
