Everyudstudent in senior high schools uses laptop to socialize with friend or improvedudknowledge and skills. There are many software in laptop when students writingudsomething. They used word processor to write. Writing was easy for students butudthey have problem in grammar. Grammar was the first problem when they want toudimprove English.udThe research problems formulated for this study were: “How can spellingudand grammar checker in Microsoft word 2007 improve students writing ability?udAnd “How can spelling and grammar checker in Microsoft word 2007 improveudstudents’ motivation in writing ability.udThe design of the study was classroom action research. The subjects of theudstudy were XI Science 2. This study focused in using spelling and grammarudchecker to improve writing ability. In CAR, there are 4 steps: planning,udimplementing, observing, and reflecting. Planning used some people instruments’udwere prepare before teaching and learning, implementing and observing wasudapplying the method to get information, and reflecting was the result of applyingudthe method.udThe findings show that after applied spelling and grammar checker in thisudstudy. Two criteria of success were achieved which based on writing score byudused scoring rubric, observation sheet, and questionnaire. There were increasedudscore writing test one that 46 % students past the test became 88% students pastudthe test in writing test 3. The result of the observation sheet and questionnaire,udthere were 91 % students’ motivated using spelling and grammar checker and 80ud% students that spelling and grammar checker helped them.udThe conclusion, based on the score writing test 3, observation sheet andudquestionnaire that spelling and grammar checker in Microsoft word 2007 wasudmotivated students and effective in improving students writing ability especiallyudgrammar, spelling, and punctuation.
