Language as means of communication is very important forudhuman being. They use language not only to talk to one and another but also to doudany activities such as: writing letter, reading book, listening to the radio and soon.udThere are many function of language. With language we can talk aboutudknowledge, information, to convey message, feeling, thought and so on. So, it isudclear that in all aspects in human lives language will be always used. As Fishmanudsaid that almost in all of activities, language is used both in spoken and writtenudform.udOne kind of language used in written form is literary work. In Indonesiaudliterary work that much influenced by a foreign language is a novel. Because ofudmodernization and growth of technology, many Indonesian are able to use moreudthan one language in their communication. Finally they do code switching in theirudactivities, like in the writing of novels.udThe problem of the research: (1) What are the types of code switchingudfound in the Novel Miss pesimis by Alia Zalea? (2) What are the reasons why theudcharacters in the Novel Miss pesimis switch from Bahasa Indonesia into Englishudor the other way around?udThe purposes of research: (1) To find out the type of code switching usedudby the characters in the dialogues in the Novel Miss pesimis, (2) To find out theudreasons why the characters in the Novel Miss pesimis switch their language fromudBahasa Indonesia into English or the other way around.udThe research design of this study was library study with qualitativeudapproach. It is because all the data are in the form of words. There was only oneudkind of sources of data in this research, that was, the dialogue spoken by theudcharacters in the Novel Miss pesimis by Alia Zalea. The data collection methodudused was documentation.udThe research findings show: (1) The type of Code switching found in theudnovel Miss pesimis are: Intra-sentential switching, Intersentential switching,udemblematic, establishing continuity with the previous speaker And the last type,udInvolving a change pronunciation),(2) The reason why the character do codeudswitching in their dialogue found in the novel Miss pesimis are: characters switchudtheir dialogues because of expressing their group identity, the characters beingudempatic about something, Interjection code switching, the characters used codeudswitching because of talking about particular topic, repetition use forudclarifications,and the last the characters use code switching because of theirudintention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor.udxudThis research suggest to student to know more about sociolinguisticudaspect the use of (code switching) in order to make their knowledge about Englishudgetting increase. It is also expected that the future researchers can develop thisudresearch by including all related aspects of code switching in different dimension.
