This technique can make the students easier to comprehend the text without opening dictionary. The students guess and infer the unknown words’ meaning based on the context by using the clues around them. Then, the students check or clarify the meaning by opening dictionary. Therefore, this technique can make students more active and make the teaching and learning be fun, not monotonous and boring.udThe research problems are: 1) How is the students’ achievement in reading before they are taught by using Guessing Technique? 2) How is the students’ achievement in reading after they are taught by using Guessing Technique? 3) Is there any significant difference between the students’ achievement in reading before and after they are taught by using Guessing Technique?udBased on the research problems, the objectives of this research are: 1) To know the students’ achievement in reading before they are taught by using Guessing Technique 2) To know the students’ achievement in reading before they are taught by using Guessing Technique 3) To know the significant difference between the students’ achievement in reading before and after they are taught by using Guessing Technique.udIn this research, the researcher used quantitative approach exactly in experimental research design. The population of this research was all of the first grade students of MA Darul Huda Wonodadi Blitar, while the sample was the first science students that occupied by 30 students. The researcher used purposive sampling for taking sample. To get the data, the researcher used test as the instrument of the research. After getting the data, the researcher analyzed them by using t-test manually and using SPSS 16.0 for windows. The analysis was aimed to know whether H0 that stated there is no significant difference between the students’ achievement in reading before and after they taught by using Guessing Technique can be rejected or not. udThe finding showed that the highest score of pre-test means before the students got the treatment was 75. The highest score after they got the treatment increased to 80. Moreover, the mean of pre-test was 64.50, while post-test 71.67. The result of t-test (tcount) was 11.564, whereas ttable was 2.045. It means that tcount was greater than ttable (11.564 > 2.045). Hence, H0 that stated there is no significant difference between the students’ achievement in reading before and after they taught by using Guessing Technique was rejected. In other words, there was significant difference between the students’ achievement in reading before and after they are taught by using Guessing Technique. Simply, Guessing Technique was effective to apply and can be used as an alternative technique in teaching reading.
