Narrative Matters: ‘The third space’ in Adolescent and Young Adult Fiction

In his article ‘Narrative Matters’, Gordon Bates (Bates,ud2016) discusses the relevance of the humanities, and inudparticular that of fiction, in helping us to understand theudexperiences and problems of adolescents suffering men-udtal health problems. Notably, the number of novels pub-udlished for children and adolescents that focus on mentaludhealth problems has risen considerably since the begin-udning of this century. The ‘Goodreads’ (Goodreads, 2016)udwebsite lists more than 1000 fiction titles on mattersudpertaining to mental illness published for the UK and USudmarkets since 2000.
