This interim report sets out the work of the Interdepartmental Group in relation to how diversion could be facilitated, where appropriate, at all stages of the criminal process up to the conclusion of a criminal trial. These stages include:ud• Diversion following first contact with the Garda Síochánaud• Diversion of persons remanded in custodyud• Court diversion before trial: the fitness to be tried procedureud• Facilitating the psychiatric assessment of accused persons before trialud• The verdict of not guilty by reason of insanityud• Diversion of persons with mental illness who are convicted of offences.ududMatters relating to mental health services for prisoners, matters relating to patients detained under the Criminal Law (Insanity) Act 2006 and post-release mental health services for former prisoners will be the subject of a further report of the Interdepartmental Group.
