Training communities to respond to drugs. Evaluation of a drugs awareness training programme: a pilot study.

This report describes a ten-week drugs awareness training programme devised by Merchant's Quay Project (MQP). The programme was available to all interested community members, particularly from areas afflicted by drugs problems. This report evaluates the effectiveness of the training programme in terms of increasing participants knowledge of drug issues, changing their attitudes and attracting community members who had not previously accessed similar programmes. All the participants said they would recommend the course to others, with 55% reporting the content as being 'very good, with 39% reporting the content as 'good'. In terms of improving knowledge about drugs issues, 33% were very satisfied with knowledge gained and 43% were 'satisfied'. The majority (86%) expressed satisfaction at the skills obtained on the training programme. 52% of participants stated that their attitudes toward drug use had changed after attending the course, with 55% more accepting of others as a result of the programme.
