CLINICAL TRIALS ON SULFOBENZYLPENICILLIN (SB-PC) IN INFECTIONS IN THE FIELD OF UROLOGY AND FOR PROPHYLACTIC TREATMENT OF POST-OPERATIVE INFECTION

1. Four to 30 grams of SB-PC were given daily to 10 patients for treatment of urinary tract infections and to 4 patients for post-operative wound infections for 6 to 16 days. Ten grams of SB-PC and 4 grams of cephalothin (CET) were simultaneously given to 12 patients for prophylaxis of post-operative wound infections for 7 to 16 days. 2. Bacteria such as Pseudomonas from 8 patients, E. coli from 2 patients, Klebsiella from 2 patients and Enterobacter from 1 patient were isolated from 13 patients out of 14 patients treated with SB-PC alone. Good results were obtained in 8 cases due to Pseudomonas, in 1 case due to E. coli and in 1 case due to Klebsiella but a negative result was obtained in 1 case due to Enterobacter. 3. In the patients for prophylaxis of post-operative wound infections, good results were obtained in 1 case out of 4 treated with SB-PC alone and in 11 cases out of 12 treated with SB-PC+CET. 4. No side effects were observed. When biochemical analysis (Ht value, BUN, GOT and GPT) and electrolyte analysis (Na, K and CI in blood serum) were carried out before and during the administration of this drug, the distinct difference of these values was not observed.
