Sixty-five abacteriuric patients requiring indwelling catheter after urological operation were studied with a closed drainage system using plastic disposable drainage bag. All of patients received administration of ampicillin, carbenicillin or cephalothin for five to seven days after surgery. Thirteen percent of sixty-five patients became infected during the entire period of catheter drainage. Positive urine cultures of bladder urine sharply increased after seven days of catheterization. The closed drainage system is effective not only in preventing catheterassociated infection but in nursing care of urological ward. The closed drainage system should be practiced to prevent hospital infection during indwelling catheterization.
