摘要

[Abstract]: This chapter examines the ‘field’ of international Traveller and nomadic education research, and argues the need for this volume in significantly extending the boundaries of that ‘field’. The author argues that, like itinerant groups, a chief characteristic of Traveller and nomadic education research is its mobility; it shifts and flows as it engages with broader developments in educational provision and research. The author posits that the approach adopted in this volume – the mapping and celebration of international diversity – is necessary to expand contemporary understandings of the multiple experiences of itinerancy, especially as they relate to education. This proposition constitutes the rationale for this collection of chapters about Traveller and nomadic education research about six kinds of itinerant people in Nigeria, India, Scotland, England, the Netherlands and Australia.
