This thesis deals with the study of the finite element analysis and direct differentiation method applied in the optimum design of structures. The penalty function technique and Newtonu27s method are employed to solve the optimization problem with inequality constraint. The thesis also focuses on the sensitivity analysis, the effects of penalty parameters and convergence to the exact optimal solution. Several benchmark problems are used to verify the algorithms discussed.Dept. of Mathematics and Statistics.
