Digital filtering has become one of the most advanced and the most indispensable means of processing analogue and digital data for electrical engineers today. Filters are used in an extremely wide range of practical everyday applications as in the medical field to very special uses as in space exploration. Each filter is used in a particular situation and for a specific use. Hence a special filter must be designed for each application. This can be costly when many different types of filters are needed on a particular apparatus. This report emphasizes a technique by which digital filters, both 1-D and 2-D FIR and IIR filters can have a variable cutoff frequency. This tunability characteristic is developed for both the 1-D case and then expanded to the 2-D case. Many existing algorithms along with new algorithms have been incorporated into the development of these filters. Implementation issues for these filters are also presented, and tunability characteristics and maximum error are shown to analyze the quality of the filter through its different cutoff frequency values.
