Exploring the links between sexual coercion and condom negotiation.

摘要

This exploratory research examined the link between sexual coercion and condom negotiation. Prior research has focused on these two concepts separately. Even though researchers have suggested that there is a connection, the nature of this connection has not been examined. This research examined (1) the influence of a history of coercion on condom use and on the ability to negotiate condom use/avoidance when a partner disagrees; (2) similarities and differences in condom negotiation and sexual coercion techniques; and (3) the influence of determinants of sexual coercion identified in previous research on both sexual coercion and condom use. Four hundred and sixty-three students at the University of Windsor completed a survey which addressed demographic characteristics, such as age and gender; sexual history, such as the total number of lifetime partners and the context of past experiences; coercive techniques that the respondent has used or experienced; and condom negotiation techniques. The main finding was that a relationship does exist between sexual coercion and condom negotiation, but this relationship rests with the avoidance of condoms and not the use of them. Perpetrators of sexual coercion were found to use condoms less frequently (or avoid them more often); techniques for both sexual coercion and avoidance of condoms were similar; and for women, the determinants of sexual coercion were also determinants of condom use. Suggestions for future research include methodological considerations (such as a larger and more diverse sample), theoretical considerations (such as better operationalizations of sexual coercion) and programmatical considerations (such as gender specific education on condom use).Dept. of Sociology and Anthropology.
