Radiological and motility studies of the sigmoid are described in three common conditions: painful irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diverticulosis without and diverticulosis with IBS-like pain. The phenomenon, especially studies in these patients and compared with a control group, was their left lower abdominal pain and its correltates. IBS patients with painless diarrhea and/or painless constipation were not considered. It was hoped that collection and comparison of the data might improve the diagnostic possibilities of the radiologist and might elucidate the cause of the pain and possible links between the three conditions. ...
