Dimethylsulphide (DMS), is a ubiquitous trace gas, derived from the precursor B-dimethyl-sulphoniopropionate (DMSP), which is produced by many marine algae. The function of DMSP in algae is still under discussion; it has been suggested that DMSP acts as a compatible solute under nitrogen limited conditions. Furthermore, due to its enzyme stabilizing properties DMSP may act as a cryoprotectant for algae living in polar ice.
