There is growing interest in scientific literature udand in research projects on climate adaptive building udskins -CABS-. A large development of this typeud of building skins is expected, because of the udadvantages they offer over other skins, such as thude improvement of environmental quality and energy udefficiency, the adaptability to cudlimate and changing uses of buildiudngs, the ability to use low exergy udsources, the potential for integrating architecturalud design principles with energy efficiency, the udpossibility of driving the research on new technologies audnd a greater efficiency in the use of materials. udHowever, this development is not taking place in practice, since most projects either remain on udexperimental prototypes or are imudplemented in high budget buildings. udThis paper examines the relevance of applying a biudomimetic approach to the design of CABS, given udthe adaptive behaviour of both systems. udBy studying the correlation between the functiudonal requirements of adaptive building skins and udadaptive strategies that can be found in natural udorganisms, we address the possible overcoming of udsome limits they face in their development –udfrom design, technological, economic and social-. udThe aim is to further the implementation of biomimudetic principles and adaptive strategies to enhance udadaptive behaviour, take advantage of the evolutiudonary knowledge that nature provides, derive udapplying principles to achieve best architectural udsolutions, serve as a driver of innovation in udarchitecture and promote efficiency and sustainabilitudy in building skins, using principles such as udoptimality in resource management, resilience behaviourud, exchange of information and energy with the udenvironment, complexity by organization udof simple elements, or multifunctionality. udFinally, biomimicry has shown udto be a suitable approach, which, by putting systematic design udprocesses into practice, yet to achieve, could promotude the widespread developmudent of climate adaptive udbuilding skins.
