摘要

In many countries throughout the EuropeanudCommunity (EC) there are national projects toudaddress the safe management of radioactive wastesudwhich arise from activities such as nuclear energyudgeneration, medical treatments and industrial researchudprogrammes. Any long-lived intermediate level (ILW)udand high-level (HLW) wastes so generated cannot beudsafely disposed to near-surface facilities with low-leveludand short-lived wastes. Therefore waste managementudagencies and government appointed regulatory bodiesudare considering either disposal or retrievable storage inuddeep geological formations. The fundamental purposeudof such management options is to isolate the wastesudover very long timescales and hence to protect humansudand the surface environment from harmful radiologicaludexposures.
