The article presents a comparative analysis of the functional and communicative approaches towards teaching English grammar. The author suggests the classification of the vocabulary based on the categorical principles unlike the traditional functional principles. Teaching-learning process within and through the situations does not exclude explanation of some difficulties using the equivalents in the native language.
