A low cost surface treatment technique was developed to improve wear resistance of ductile cast iron (DI) in terms of diffusion welding of molten DI with stainless steel. The essential idea of fabricating wear resistant DI is concerned with diffusion-formed chromium carbides made from chromium sourse in stainless steel and carbon source in DI. To find the most suitable condition for forming chromium carbides, two kinds of stainless steel SUS 304 and SUS 340,different pouring temperature and specimen thickness were employed. Finally the validity of the proposed method was checked in a newly developed-erosion-resistant testing machine. Furthermore, the improvement of wear resistance was quantitatively demonstrated through comparison tests using medium carbon steel and non-surface-treated DI.
