This research was aimed to find out the improvement of the students‘udachievement at speaking through small group discussion method. The subject ofudthis research was the second grade students MTs Bina Ulama, Kisaran, inudacademic year 2016/2017. It consisted of one class with 45 students asudrespondents.udThis research was conducted by using classroom action research. Theudtechnique of analyzing data was applied in this research were qualitative andudquantitative. The qualitative data were taken from observation sheet, interviewudand documentation. The quantitative data were taken from tests. The tests wereudgiven to the students in the form of pre-test, post-test I and post-test II.udThe result ofuddata analysis showed that there was an improvement on the students‘ speakingudability from each cycle. It was showed from the mean of pre-test was 62.22, afterudimplementation of small group discussion strategy was applied, there wasudimprovement of the result of the students‘ mean which was 73.04 and for theudsecond cycle after reflection on the first cycle there was an improvement of theudstudents‘ mean which was 81.08. Moreover in the pre-test, there were 40% (18udstudents of 45 students) who got score ≥ 70. In the post-test I, there were 71.2%ud(32 students of 45 students) who got score ≥ 70. In the post-test II, there wereud100% (45 students of 45 students) who got score ≥ 70. So, the total percentage ofudthe improvement from pre-test to post-test II was about 60%.
