Based upon a unique Junction-PHEMTuddevice, a novel method of providing high efficiency PAudpower control for variable envelope modulation schemes isuddemonstrated for EDGE and WCDMA. The method ofudcontrol allows for substantially higher efficiency levelsudunder typical handset operating conditions than those ofudconventional linear power amplifiers, on a par with polarudloop solutions, whilst avoiding the necessity for complexudcontrol loops. An immediate benefit of the approachudincludes the ability to add EDGE front-end capability to audGSM handset without incurring a significant size orudcomponent cost impact. Furthermore, the method of controludaids the future prospect of single transmit strip multi-modeudconfigurations (GSM/EDGE/WCDMA) in order to achieveudconsiderable size and cost advantages.
