Transporting Tourism into a Sustainable Mobility Paradigm - A case study of tourism’s impact on transport planning in Bali, Indonesia

This thesis explores the impacts of tourism on the transport system in tourist dependent economies. It explores the concept of a socially sustainable mobility paradigm as opposed to a mobility paradigm where the objective is to maximise transport efficiency. The theoretical framework is applied to a case study of Bali, where the priority in transport planning is to provide tourists with efficient access. This has resulted in increasing spatial and social inequalities, and a segregation of tourist and local transport modes. Institutional disempowerment and fragmentation are explored as barriers to successful implementation of transport plans. It goes on to discuss which planning initiatives can be used to ensure a more socially sustainable mobility policy and the opportunity for de-coupling transport planning from tourism dependence by consolidating the transport needs of both tourists and the local population.
